Enduring Love
NorthStar Care Community Presents: The Life’s Big Moments Blog — February 2026
A special thank you to Jordan Carson and Jim for sharing Jim and Judy’s beautiful “Life’s Big Moments” love story.
This month’s Life’s Big Moments story features lessons of enduring love, taught by example in this personal love story of Jim and Judy.
Jim was a NorhtStar Care Community Palliative Care patient, his wife, Judy, received hospice care through Hospice of Michigan. Judy passed away just a month before the writing and filming of this story, and Jim passed away, January 29, 2026, three days before we planned to share their beautiful love story with the world.
With their family’s permission, we are honored to share Jim’s heartfelt interview. Known to many as “Coach,” Jim leaves behind a lasting legacy—one that will continue to coach us all in knowing the definition of enduring love and devotion.

Love That Endures at Every Age and Stage
Love doesn’t belong to one season of life.
It isn’t reserved for first dates or wedding days, for young families or milestone anniversaries. Love shows up again and again—changing form, deepening with time, and revealing itself most clearly when life slows down and what matters most comes into focus.
At NorthStar Care Community, we are privileged to witness love at every age and stage. From the excitement of new beginnings to the quiet tenderness of life’s later chapters, love remains the constant thread.
Love Grows Up With Us
When we are young, love often feels urgent and full of possibility. It is handwritten letters, long conversations, and dreams of the future. As years pass, love matures. It becomes partnership. Commitment. Shared responsibility. Inside jokes. Forgiveness. A common language. The steady presence of someone who knows your story because they helped write it.
And later still, love becomes something even deeper.
It is holding hands in silence. It is showing up when things are hard. It is remembering together. It is saying, “I’m still here.”
A Hospice Love Story
In hospice and palliative care, we see love distilled to its essence.
Here, love is not about grand gestures. It is about devotion, presence, and honoring a shared life.
For Jim, love lived in the small, sacred moments he reflected on after the passing of his wife, Judy.
“I think one of the moments that I reflect upon now after she is gone… she’d snuggle and put her head right here. I would hold her, and she’d look at me and smile—and she knew everything was good.”
Jim and Judy were married for 68 years—a lifetime shaped by shared growth, faith, and deep respect.
“I can’t describe not only the respect, but also the love that I had for Judy… We got married at the right time, and we grew together.”
Love, for them, was expressed not just in words, but in knowing the details that mattered. Judy loved red roses—so Jim made sure roses were always part of their life together.
“Her flowers of choice were roses—red roses. And so, as we went through life together, I always made a point of making sure that we planted roses and grew roses.”
Even at the end, love remained intentional and tender.
“When the people from the funeral home came… I crossed her hands, she had a red rose. That was very meaningful—not only to our family, but I know it was very meaningful to her.”
Love, Care, and Compassion at the End of Life
Judy had a deep connection to Hospice of Michigan, where she volunteered for 17 years. Jim had been connected even longer. When the time came, hospice care surrounded their family with compassion and dignity.
“My wife was in good hands. My wife was in loving hands. She was cared for not only with empathy, but with devotion to her as a person.”
In the quiet moments that followed, Jim put his love into words—writing from his heart to hers.
“God has given you a pure spirit… Your presence brings sunshine into everyone’s life. There is an air of royalty in all phases of your life, shown in your concern for people and your desire to serve without asking anything in return.”
And with gratitude for a lifetime shared, he closed simply and powerfully:
“Your children and grandchildren love you, and we are so proud of the life you live. Above all, I love you and thank God for these years He has allowed us to be together. Love always, me.”
What Love Teaches Us Near the End of Life
Being close to the end of life has a way of clarifying what matters most.
Love teaches us:
- That time together is precious
- That shared memories are a form of legacy
- That love does not end when a life ends
- That connection continues through stories, letters, and lived values
Hospice care exists to protect this love—to make room for conversations, memories, forgiveness, laughter, tears, and everything in between.
Love Is a Lifelong Story
From the first “I love you” to the last “goodbye”—and beyond—love carries us.
It shows up in new relationships and lifelong marriages. In caregiving and companionship. In grief and remembrance. In letters written decades ago and read with reverence today.
At NorthStar Care Community, we believe love is one of life’s biggest moments—not because it is perfect, but because it is enduring.
And at every age and stage, love matters.
